Background of the study
Forensic anthropology plays a critical role not only in criminal investigations but also in resolving identity fraud cases. In Ikom Local Government Area, Cross River State, incidents of identity fraud have been linked to the misidentification of skeletal remains, complicating legal proceedings. Forensic methods such as osteological analysis, biometric comparisons, and DNA profiling are employed to accurately determine individual identities (Ndukwe, 2023). Technological advancements have enhanced these capabilities; however, challenges persist due to limited forensic resources, inconsistencies in data collection, and the complexity of aging skeletal remains (Obioma, 2024). This study assesses the impact of forensic anthropology in resolving identity fraud, particularly in cases where traditional identification methods fail. By critically examining forensic case studies and current practices, the research aims to identify gaps in methodology and propose strategic improvements to enhance the accuracy of victim identification and reduce instances of identity fraud (Akanbi, 2025). The findings are expected to contribute to legal processes, improve forensic training, and foster public trust in forensic investigations. The study will utilize interdisciplinary approaches, including case reviews, forensic laboratory analyses, and interviews with forensic experts to develop a robust framework for effective identification and improved community resilience.
Statement of the problem
Identity fraud cases in Ikom pose significant challenges due to misidentification of skeletal remains and limited forensic resources. Inconsistencies in data collection and aging remains complicate the accuracy of identification methods (Ndukwe, 2023; Obioma, 2024). These challenges lead to prolonged legal disputes and undermine public trust in forensic investigations (Akanbi, 2025). Traditional identification techniques are often inadequate, resulting in unresolved identity fraud cases. This study seeks to address these issues by evaluating current forensic practices and proposing strategic improvements to enhance the accuracy of victim identification and reduce instances of fraud. Immediate, innovative solutions are vital.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate current forensic methods in resolving identity fraud cases.
To identify challenges affecting the accuracy of skeletal identification.
To propose strategic improvements for enhancing forensic verification procedures.
Research questions:
What forensic techniques are used in resolving identity fraud in Ikom?
What challenges impede accurate identification of skeletal remains in fraud cases?
How can forensic methodologies be improved to reduce instances of identity fraud?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Advanced forensic techniques significantly improve the accuracy of identity verification.
H2: Limited forensic resources and data inconsistencies negatively affect identification outcomes.
H3: Strategic improvements in forensic methodologies will reduce the incidence of identity fraud.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it addresses the challenges of resolving identity fraud cases using forensic anthropology. By evaluating current practices and proposing methodological improvements, the research aims to enhance the accuracy of victim identification and legal processes. The findings will inform policy reforms, improve forensic training, and ultimately foster public trust in forensic investigations, leading to more efficient resolution of identity fraud cases.
